Hertfordshire Progressive Synagogue

Volunteer with HPS

Lending your hands, heart, and skills to strengthen our community.

Volunteering is at the very heart of Hertfordshire Progressive Synagogue. From welcoming visitors on Erev Shabbat to running our religion school and supporting neighbors in need, our volunteers make everything we do possible. Giving your time is a powerful way to put Jewish values into action, meet fellow members, and shape the future of our united community.

Ways to Get Involved

We have volunteer opportunities tailored to every schedule, interest, and skill set:

  • Pastoral Care & Member Support (Chesed): Join our visiting network, make friendly welfare phone calls to older or isolated members, deliver holiday gift packs, or assist with our monthly Memory Café.
  • Welcoming & Hospitality: Serve as a friendly door greeter on Shabbat, help prepare Friday night Kiddush, or assist with catering and setup for communal festival feasts.
  • Community Security Team: Train with the Community Security Trust (CST) to help keep our congregants, children, and campuses safe during services and major events.
  • Youth & Education: Assist teachers in our Sunday primary religion school, help run interactive crafts for early years Tot Shabbat, or support teenage youth events.
  • Eco & Gardening Group: Help maintain our garden spaces at the Radlett campus and Elstree campus and drive green initiatives as part of our commitment to environmental sustainability.
  • Tech, Media & Admin: Assist our team with service live-streaming, audio-visual setups, event photography, writing newsletter articles, or administrative support in the office.
  • Social Action (Tikkun Olam): Help collect and distribute items for local Hertsmere food banks, support refugee relief projects, or participate in interfaith community work.

Fits Around Your Schedule

Whether you can offer one hour a month or a regular weekly commitment, every contribution matters.

  • Ad-Hoc / One-Off: Event setup, driver for occasional service lifts, or seasonal cleanup days.
  • Regular Commitments: Rota-based roles such as security shifts, religion school assistance, or joining a governance sub-committee.
