Our Values
The Principles That Guide Our Community, Worship, and Action
Rooted in tradition, guided by equality, inspired to act.
At Hertfordshire Progressive Synagogue, our values are the compass for everything we do from how we pray and educate our children to how we support one another and engage with the wider world. Rooted in the rich heritages of both Radlett Reform and The Elstree Liberal Synagogue, these core principles reflect our shared vision for a dynamic, modern Jewish life.
Radical Inclusivity & Equality We believe that every person is created b'tzelem Elohim (in the image of God). We are fully egalitarian: people of all genders participate equally in ritual, leadership, and synagogue life. We offer a genuine, unconditional welcome to interfaith families, LGBTQ+ individuals, and anyone seeking a meaningful connection to Progressive Judaism.
Living Tradition & Contemporary Relevance Our Judaism is dynamic, thoughtful, and evolving. We honor our ancient rituals, prayers, and heritage while ensuring they speak directly to 21st-century life. We encourage open inquiry, honest questioning, and personal choice in how each member expresses their faith.
Tikkun Olam (Repairing the World) Our faith inspires action. We are deeply committed to social justice, combating inequality, supporting local food banks, and championing environmental sustainability. We believe that living a Jewish life means actively working to create a more just and compassionate world.
Kehillah & Chesed (Community & Loving-Kindness) We are more than a place of worship; we are an extended family. We celebrate life’s greatest joys together and offer steadfast, compassionate support during times of illness, hardship, or loss. Every member matters, and no one walks alone.
Lifelong Learning & Curiosity Education is a lifelong journey. We foster curiosity and critical thinking across all generations—from our youngest early-years learners and B'Mitzvah cohorts to adult discussion groups and deep text study.
