PROGRESSIVE JUDAISM AT HPS

Bringing Together Timeless Tradition and 21st-Century Life

Hertfordshire Progressive Synagogue (HPS) is proud to be part of the vibrant, forward-looking Movement for Progressive Judaism.

Just as the national movement was recently formed to unify the Reform and Liberal Jewish traditions across the UK and Ireland, HPS was born from the historic merger of Radlett Reform Synagogue and The Elstree Liberal Synagogue. Together, we embody the very best of both heritages: a deep reverence for Jewish tradition paired with inclusive values, egalitarian practices, and a commitment to modern life.

What is Progressive Judaism?

Progressive Judaism believes that our sacred texts, traditions, and rituals are dynamic and evolving. We engage with our heritage not by simply repeating the past, but by bringing it into a meaningful conversation with the modern world.

At HPS, this means:

  • Egalitarianism & Full Equality: We believe that all people are created b'tzelem Elohim (in the image of God). People of all genders participate fully and equally in every aspect of synagogue life, ritual, and leadership.
  • Radical Inclusivity: We welcome individuals, couples, and families of all backgrounds and identities. Whether you are Jewish by birth or choice, part of an interfaith family, or LGBTQ+, we meet you where you are and support you on the Jewish journey you choose.
  • Intellectual Integrity: We encourage questioning, debate, and informed choice. We study Torah not just as ancient history, but to find its moral and spiritual relevance for our lives today.
  • Tikkun Olam (Repairing the World): Faith must lead to action. We are deeply committed to social justice, environmental stewardship, and standing up for the vulnerable, both within the Jewish community and wider society.

Our Shared Mission

In alignment with the national Movement for Progressive Judaism, HPS is dedicated to four core commitments:

1. Opening Doors to Jewish Life

We remove barriers to participation. From accessible membership contributions to welcoming interfaith families and those returning to their faith, our doors are open wide to anyone seeking a spiritual home.

2. Inspiring the Next Generation

Through our vibrant early years programs, religion school, B'Mitzvah and Kabbalat Torah cohorts, and our connection to the RSY-Netzer and LJY-Netzer youth movements, we are raising proud, confident, and joyful young Jews.

3. Strengthening Community

We are building a compassionate, resilient kehillah (community) in Hertfordshire. We support one another through life's celebrations and challenges, ensuring no one is left isolated or unsupported.

4. Amplifying Progressive Voices

We provide a confident, moral, and outward-looking Jewish voice in Hertfordshire, engaging with local civic life, interfaith dialogue, and advocating for justice and equality.

Our Heritage: Reform and Liberal Roots

HPS is a beautiful synthesis of two proud movements. From our Radlett Reform roots, we inherit a deep love of tradition, communal singing, and structured, meaningful liturgy. From our Elstree Liberal heritage, we inherit a pioneering spirit of radical inclusion, intellectual rigor, and a fierce commitment to social justice.

Together, under the banner of Progressive Judaism, we are building a united community that is stronger, more dynamic, and ready to welcome you.
