Hertfordshire Progressive Synagogue

Visit Us

Welcoming you to Hertfordshire Progressive Synagogue.

Planning Your Visit (Prospective Members & Guests)

Whether you are looking for a new spiritual home, returning to Jewish practice, or exploring Progressive Judaism for the first time, we would love to welcome you to a Shabbat service or community event.

To ensure we can give you a warm greeting and arrange security clearance, all prospective members and first-time visitors must contact the synagogue office before attending. Please get in touch at least a few days in advance so our welcoming team knows to expect you.

Our Primary Locations

We operate across two primary campuses in Hertsmere, as well as satellite locations across wider Hertfordshire:

  • Radlett Campus: Watling Street, Radlett, Hertfordshire
  • Elstree Campus: High Street, Elstree, Hertfordshire

(For detailed directions, transport links, and parking information, please view our Our Buildings & Locations page).

School Visits & Educational Tours

We warmly welcome local primary and secondary school groups, religious education (RE) classes, and community organizations. Visiting a living synagogue brings the RE curriculum to life and helps students gain an authentic understanding of Jewish faith, culture, and tradition.

Types of School Visits We Support

  • Guided Sanctuary Tours: Exploring the bima, the Ark (Aron Kodesh), and seeing a real Torah scroll up close.
  • Interactive RE Workshops: Curriculum-aligned sessions covering Jewish lifecycle events, Shabbat, and major festivals (such as Pesach, Chanukah, and Sukkot).
  • Q&A Sessions: Open, age-appropriate discussions led by our rabbinic team or experienced Jewish educators on Progressive Jewish values, ethics, and modern practice.

How to Book a School Visit

  • Submit an Inquiry: Complete our dedicated school visit request form with your preferred dates, year group, and curriculum focus.
  • Session Confirmation: Our education coordinator will contact you to confirm availability, tailor the itinerary to your learning goals, and answer any accessibility requirements.

Important Security & CST Guidelines

The safety of our members, staff, and visitors is our highest priority. In cooperation with the Community Security Trust (CST) and local police, the following measures are in place across all HPS sites:

  • Prior Contact Required: Unannounced visitors will not be permitted entry. Please ensure you have contacted the office prior to your arrival.
  • Photo Identification: All adult non-members must bring valid government-issued photo ID (e.g., passport or driving license) to show security personnel upon arrival.
  • Bag Searches & Screenings: Bag searches and security checks are conducted at all entry points. We kindly ask visitors to minimize large bags or luggage.
  • Arrival Time: Please arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled service or appointment to allow sufficient time for security checks.
